La La Falls Warburton isn’t one of the tallest waterfalls in Victoria. But it’s certainly one of the most picturesque. Tucked away in Yarra State Forest, Warburton, this hidden treasure is ideal for waterfall lovers who want to venture off the beaten track without leaving the state. Due to its proximity to Melbourne (80km), La La Falls makes an excellent day trip or a weekend getaway. And with these directions, you can be on your way there in no time!

How to get there

Getting to La La Falls is easy! To get to La La Falls, you’ll need to take a trip to Warburton. If you’re driving from Melbourne, follow the Maroondah Highway (route 34) and then the Warburton Highway (route B380) until you reach Warburton. You can’t miss it, because it’s the biggest town for miles. 

You’ll see signs for the turnoff to La La Falls as soon as you enter Warburton. But you’ll still have to go 18.3km from Warburton town to La La Falls. Take the Park Road, then La La Avenue, Old Warburton Road, and Irruka Road. Once at the roadside parking on Irruka Road, just do a 1.6km foot (La La Falls Walk ) to La La Falls.

La La Falls Walk: Route to La La Falls

The trail starts at Irruka Road and ends at the falls themselves. It’s well marked with signs along the way, so you won’t get lost! 

The walk is a 1.6km steady uphill climb through lush forest. It might be a bit demanding with exposed rocks and tree roots along the way. Nevertheless, the picturesque view is more rewarding. 

You’ll enjoy a stunning bush walk through thick Mountain Ash woodland and lovely ferny glades. Even more stunning are the little stone arch bridges along the way. Overall, the trail is a 3.2km return walk to the falls.

La La Falls: Main focal point

La La Waterfalls, which derive its waters from Four Mile Creek,  make the steady uphill climb worth it. It’s a natural waterfall with  crystal clear water that splashes and bounces off from one boulder to the next. In addition, it’s surrounded by lush green trees, making it the perfect place for a picnic.

Even better, you are rewarded at the top with a seat to relax on and let yourself be mesmerized by the rushing water. Plus, you’ll get a gorgeous view of the mountains from the top.

But to experience the incredible splendor of this serene waterfall, ensure to visit during a period of heavy rainfall. The falls are at their most powerful, providing a more spectacular view.  

Unfortunately, no swimming is available at the falls. Still, there are lots of places to put your feet in the water and cool off on a hot summer day.

Facilities & Accommodation

At the start of the trail to La La Falls, there is a picnic spot as well as a huge parking lot. However, no facilities are available at the falls themselves, except for a wooden bench where you can perch and relax.

No camping is allowed at the falls. Nevertheless, you still have options if you want to stay overnight. You can book accommodation at Warburton Lodge, Buttercup Hill, and Warburton Digs. All these accommodation facilities are approximately 1.6km from the falls.

Best time to visit

La La Falls is always open to visitors. However, I recommend visiting in winter and spring. This is when the water flow is at its highest. Also, make sure to visit in the afternoon when sun penetration is at its best. The rays peep through the canopy, illuminating the falls.
